The DSMSA
2nd Khanacross Event for 2009
was held on Sunday 14th June
The Biggest Car Event In Years!
Held all day Sunday 14th June 2009 @ The Reef & Rainforest Track, Mossman,
as an Open Khanacross for drivers 14yo and over,
25 drivers took to the track and had a blast!
The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association (DSMSA) is having it’s most successful season for many years
with 25 drivers, and countless spectators, enjoying the action at this open Khanacross held on Sunday 14th June '09.
A Khanacross is a single vehicle timed event for cars held on dirt in a race against the clock
in an effort to post the fastest time over a short closed course.
Drivers completed multiple sessions, with track variations made between sessions throughout the day.
The competition was fierce, from start to finish, with the notorious Colt Corner claiming two victims
causing identical front suspension damage to two different Holdens.
One of the victims, Gary Stephensen, was left a little shaky after his incident
however this could be more to do with old age catching up as Gary was also celebrating his birthday on the day.
Anthony Baldwin may well regret going out as a passenger and giving some speed tips to his partner,
Kelly-Anne Davies, who was share driving his Holden, as on the very next run through Colt Corner
Kelly-Anne managed to successfully rip out the left front suspension to match Gary's Holden.
Colt Corner almost claimed a Ford also to join the Holden retirees
with Foxy having two big offs on different runs, testing the outer limits on one run and the inner bank on another,
but he recovered both times to complete those runs albeit with slow times.
"I'm not making excuses" Foxy was heard to say on more than one occasion throughout the day!
DSMSA President Bob Errey could not contain his smiles all day as he consistently beat Foxy on all but one run
but then his employee Bruce Perry had the last laugh in totally thrashing his boss Bob by days end!
Continuing his winning way the 2008 Club Champion, Dave Page of Cairns, won the event in a time of 528.30 seconds,
although Dave was heading home to replace his Mitsubishi Evo’s clutch
having only just managed to complete the last run of the day
with smelly clutch smoke belching from the underside of his Evo as he finished.
Andrew Horn, of Kuranda, came in 2nd in a time of 545.39 seconds, in his Corolla,
very closely followed in 3rd place by Mossman driver Bruce Perry in his Subaru Wagon
less than ½ a second behind in 545.87 seconds.
Of particular note was the success of the junior drivers with no less than 6 juniors in the top 15 places,
and 15yo Alex Scomazzon coming in a highly credible 5th in only his second season of competition.
Many of the old blokes are now looking over their shoulders with concern, with so many talented juniors
working their way through the ranks, although it was noted that perhaps job prospects for some local juniors
could be diminished with continued embarrassing results...
It's All Great "Grass Roots" Motor Sports Fun!
