The
Motorsports Mossman Maniac Mugs Weekend
was a 2 Day Open Khanacross & Saturday Junior Motorkhana
providing two different introductory level single vehicle timed motor sports events
A weekend for little kids and big kids alike!
An Outstanding Success!
The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association hosted its biggest competition car event for many years
on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th August at its Reef & Rainforest Track, Mossman.
The Motorsports Mossman Maniac Mugs Weekend saw 22 drivers compete throughout the weekend
in a Junior Motorkhana on the Saturday afternoon, and a 2-day Open Khanacross on the Saturday and Sunday.
The success of the event was due in no small part to the attendance of Mr Ross Dunkerton.
Ross is a 5 times National Rally Champion, a record that is unequalled to this day, and has won over 100 rallies throughout his career spanning 4 decades.
Ross and his family have recently moved to Cairns, and have joined the DSMSA,
and are very enthusiastic about the Grass Roots level of Motor sports fun provided by the club.
Ross very graciously played the part of the Motorsports Mossman Mug and arrived at the track on Saturday in costume
and proceeded to take 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placegetters in the Junior Motorkhana for a lap around the track whilst still incognito in a borrowed Bluebird.
A competition was held throughout the day for the juniors to guess who the Mug might be, which Tonja Ryan guessed correctly,
and Ross then treated Tonja to a very quick few laps.
“Cars are not supposed to go that fast around corners!” said Tonja at the completion of her ride.
Many competitors and their associates attended a presentation by Ross on Saturday night, at The White Cockatoo in Mossman,
where videos, stories, and much about his career was shared by Ross in a very enjoyable and entertaining presentation.
Ross proceeded to compete on the Sunday in a Falcon station wagon, and while a lot different to the factory Mitsubishis he is used to,
he showed he is a force to be reckoned with no matter what he is driving.
The club regards itself as very fortunate to have attracted someone of the World Class caliber of Mr Dunkerton, aka Dunko, to its ranks,
and looks forward to seeing Ross and his family at many events in the future.
Big Thanks To:
Ross Dunkerton,
Steve "Curly" Hendry for providing his Bluebird for The Mug to thrash,
Lyn Scales for event timing, photography & videography, Suzanne Wocheslander for photography,
Coralie Perry for organising raffle, Alex Scomazzon for looking after the Junior competitors,
and Sugarland Meats, Autopro Mossman, The Juice Bar, & The White Cockatoo, for donating prizes to the raffle.
Without their efforts and generosity these events would not be as successful as they are.
