The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association’s 1st event for 2008 held on 3rd March, in Craiglie,
was a roaring success with 10 drivers competing and hundreds of spectators taking in the action throughout the day.
Held as a Motorkhana competition was fast and furious, around the witches hats making up the course, with superior driving skills displayed by all who competed.
At the end of the day, and after completing 21 runs each, only a little over a minute separated 1st and last places.

Perhaps it might have been closer if Joe Warren had realised it was a motorkhana rather than a burn-out comp,

and had managed to stop his Turbo Celica from doing circle work!

Andrew Horn took out 1st place overall in a time of 565.05 seconds,

with his partner Anne Thornbury a close 2nd in 574.15 in a shared older Toyota Corolla.

Anne is a very good example of what can be achieved, after only 2 years of competition,

and is now beating most of the blokes on a regular basis.

Melbourne based, and frequent Port Douglas visitor,

Terry Saville was a very credible 3rd in his exotic Clubman Special,

and was only 1.25 seconds behind Anne.
Competitors cars were divided into 4 classes,
depending on wheel-base and drive mode,
with Terry Saville winning Class B, Andrew Horn taking out Class C,
Tony Fox, in his big Falcon, winning class D,
and Graham King, in the wife’s Subaru, the 4WD class.
Bob Errey, the clubs President, passes on thanks to The White Cockatoo, Port Douglas Hardware, Coates Hire, and Waks Developments for their valuable support.
“Without this support events like this can’t happen” he said,
“and we are most fortunate to have local businesses, with enthusiastic proprietors like these supporting our activities”.
The next event is planned for 30th March with the same Motorkhana format at the same venue,
with numerous Khanacrosses and practise days also planned throughout the year, all of which is shown via Event Calendar.
The club welcomes competitors of all ages, and in all sorts of vehicles,
and competition in the legal and controlled environment allows for fast-track learning of many skills required in daily driving.
