The DSMSA
1st Khanacross Event for 2009
was held on Sunday 17th May
Bloody Brilliant
was the unanimous opinion
of all involved!
Held all day Sunday 17th May 2009 @ The Reef & Rainforest Track, Mossman,
as an Open Khanacross for drivers 14yo and over,
22 drivers took to the track and had a blast!
Dave Page was the winner on the day, yet again, with Foxy coming in 2nd, yet again,
and DSMSA President Bob Errey finishing a very credible 3rd in his 1st event in years.
A bright start to a fast fun fueled day, with the enthusiastic banter filled competitors
signing up at 8am and although It was thought that due to recent rains the Reef & Rainforest Track
may not have been in pristine condition for this event,
this proved to be totally incorrect with a few new track aspects in the morning,
along with the use of the notorious Colt Corner after lunch,
providing almost perfect track conditions for super quick racing throughout the day.
Some of the more memorable moments
were when one car decided to come down from Treeline backwards,
while another driver got the club car up on two wheels.
There were many many near misses with the trees at the end of Cockatoo Curve,
but some accurate steering and auspicious skidding, kept most cars safe!
This time no cars were wrecked at the mercy of the infamous Colts Corner,
although suspensions were tested, sometimes a little too far.
Jodie, the drop-in English backpacker, took great delight in her timekeeping role
enforcing penalties without sympathy, of which there were a few,
and even went so far as to color code the time sheet
so all competitors knew at a glance they'd stuffed up!
The Holden Museum provided a big entry list of varying models and vintage
with a Gemini, 2 Camiras, and 3 Commodores,
plus a camouflaged Commodore posing as a Toyota Lexcen,
all showing up to compete.
Funnily enough almost all of them had mechanical dramas throughout the day,
with one finally succumbing totally,
and all were soundly beaten by an Old Ford which didn't even have its bonnet lifted all day!
The DSMSA is exceptionally proud of the results achieved by the junior drivers who competed
with 2 fifteen year old Juniors finishing in the top 10 and 4 in the top 15!
Junior member Alex Scomazzon not only finished 2nd in Class he finished an awesome 6th Overall
which also saw him soundly thrash his Dad, Mick, in every run of the day!
Fellow 15 year old local junior Jaqui Osbourne, well representing the feisty females as well,
came in an absolutely awesome 9th overall!
Jaqui could not even drive a car 18 months ago
and is now beating many much more experienced drivers.
Proof positive that driver education for the young, in environments like ours,
will see much better drivers on our public roads in the future.
It was great to see so many people out and about enjoying the fun in the sun,
whether up from Cairns, down from the Tablelands, or from just down the road.
To see so many Mossman locals coming along was especially pleasing
and to have a bunch join as new members to compete on the day or at future events
provides continued motivation and efforts by those involved in putting these events together
and encouraging locals to come have some grass-roots Motorsports Fun.
Thanks here go to: Bob Errey, Tony Fox, Shane North,
Alex & Mick Scomazzon, Anthony Baldwin, & Jodie Sage.
A great day was had by all, with a tasty BBQ for lunch
keeping hungry drivers, supporting families, and spectators happy.
The day was extended to give the adrenalin junkies with a thirst for more the biggest hit,
and finished off with trophies being shared out to the ‘Best’
although one might argue simply the luckiest!
Full results are shown below which reflect that mentioned above
clearly showing skills above speed and better brands before bullshit!
