Promoting Competition Car Events Since 2006
The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association hosted The Mossman Autopro Khanacross at its Reef and Rainforest track on Sunday 18th October, with yet another great turn-out of drivers.
23 drivers took to the Mossman track, with 20 managing to complete the event due to three Cairns drivers sharing the same car having to retire after only the very 1st run of the day due to mechanical issues.
Fortunately there were no major incidents during the day, with all drivers managing to stay on 4 wheels and on track.
The highlight of the day was Stick Quinn, of Cairns, competing in an immaculate Luxury Mercedes Benz!
Stick managed to not only finish the event unscathed, in the Big Benz Beast, he came home a very credible 11th overall in a car that is totally unsuited to Khanacross competition.
Stick sold the Big Benz at the end of the day, to another competitor, and it is believed it is about to become a local resorts courtesy car!
Proving that Girls can compete with the Guys six "Ladies" not only competed, but actually completed the event!
Three 15yo, and one 13yo, local Mossman High School girls were among the twenty finishers for the day, along with 2 other "Lady" drivers with 1st time driver Krista Henry, of Julatten, and 1600-2lt Class Leader Monica Scomazzon of Mossman.
Monica finished 13th Overall, and Krista 14th, and respective 2nd and 3rd in "Ladies" Class.
The 'school-girl' section saw Jackie Osbourne finishing a very credible 8th Overall in the Club Camry, along with 1st in Ladies Class and 2nd Junior, and in doing so she beat many much more experienced macho male drivers!
Demi Norris finished 17th Overall, in her Mazda 323, with Emily Stephensen close behind in 18th place in her Big Commodore, and Hayley Kenna gaining experience in her own private Motorkhana.
1st Junior was another Mossman local Alex Scomazzon who finished 5th Overall, and 3rd Junior was Jaiden Barnes in his newly purchased ex Ben Burke 2007 Championship winning laser.
The club is very proud to provide local kids the opportunity to have some car fun, in a safe controlled environment, while learning invaluable skills for when they are all eligible to drive on public roads.
Although it seems that many of the above mentioned Juniors are going to kick some old bloke butt next season!
Whilst there were a number of out-of-town drivers competing Mossman drivers also took out the top 3 places on the day with Bruce Perry, in his trusty Subaru, again in 1st place Overall, Foxy (forever the bridesmaid) 2nd in his barely surviving old Falcon, with Mick Scomazzon a fast charging 3rd using the Club Camry.
All in All.... Another Awesome Event with big thanks to Mossman Autopro for their invaluable contribution of an Invertor to power all future DSMSA events. (No mention here of someone closely related to the sponsor flipping a car, just outside the track within view and hearing, during the drivers briefing while Mossman Autopro was being thanked for their support! We hope that don't mean bad karma and damage future sponsorships and support ;)
