Tableland Automatics "fun driving" Weekend
Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th June '08
While focusing more on driver education and all round fun, for the Juniors,
there was also a competition aspect to the Saturday Motorkahana
with all drivers completing 7 timed runs each.

The Junior Motorkhana provided an introductory level single vehicle timed event on grass
in a race against the clock in an effort to post the fastest time over a short closed course.

In 1st place was Alex Scomazzon in a total time of 228.87 seconds,
followed by Duane Hoffman, in 2nd, in 235.39 secs,
and keeping it in the family was Ethan Hoffman in 3rd place in a time of 246.05 secs.

Others to compete, with all doing exceptionally well, were
Kyle Skyring, Jaiden Barnes, Tonja Ryan, Eden Thornbury,
Aaron Dunkerton, Nikita Horn, and Jackie Osbourne.

All kids had mile wide smiles as their confidence grew and their skills improved!

All Junior competitors were accompanied by parents or guardians
all of whom got right into the enthusiasm of the day.

With such great enthusiasm being shown by the juniors and parents alike
plans are already being made for another Junior Motorkhana to be held in August.

In the meantime have a watch of the "Test Dirvers" The Kids @ Play
via the video here to the right.

Sunday was a full day Khanacross, for all drivers over 14 years old.

Two Juniors from Saturday competed on Sunday as well,
with both Tonja Ryan and Alex Scomazzon playing with the big kids
and showing themselves to be drivers to watch out for in the future.

Both Alex and Tonja did exceptionally well and both took home trophies.

Alex 1 trophy as 1st Junior, and Tonja with 3 trophies
as 2nd Junior, 1st Lady, and 3rd in Under 1600cc.

Like all the juniors who competed throughout the weekend
Tonja and Alex are proof in the pudding of a little driver education going a long way!

The fact they were all able to have a lot of fun,
in a safe and legal environment while doing so,
only added to their interest in learning.

Alex actually finished the day only 20 seconds behind an adult competitor!

After 9 runs each this was an awesome result
and if it wasn't for a couple of small mistakes he could well have beaten his Dad,
but he certainly has him in his sights for future events!

Sundays Khanacross had 14 competitors, who all completed 9 runs each,
and for the 1st time in many events there were no DNFs on the day.

In 1st Place overall was Curly Hendry
in his immaculate Hot Red Bluebird
in a time of 874.38 seconds.

Curly was also 1st in the 1600 - 2lt Class.

This was Curly's 1st overall event win for a while
and thankfully he was able to dodge the banks this time
to acheive such a great result.

A Weekend for Little Kids & Big Kids Alike!
Yet another very successful Motorsports event was hosted by The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association
at the clubs Mossman based Reef & Rainforest Track on Sat 14th & Sun 15th June '08.

The Tableland Automatics “fun driving” Weekend was a 2 day event
with the highlight of the weekend being ten 12 to 17 year old teenagers competing in a Junior Motorkhana on the Saturday.

Some had never before even driven a car, and all started a little tentatively.

By days end all had shown dramatic signs of improvement in their driving, albeit some frightening the daylights out of their parents
acting as coaches in the passengers seat!

Dave Page came in a very close second overall
only 5 seconds back
in a time of 879.62 secs.

This also had him 1st in 4WD Class.

Dave's imported Evo is slowly getting sorted
and will be in a class of its own
in the very near future.

Note the little camera on the dash of Dave's car.

The video to the far right is a dash eye view
of 4 different track layouts
from Daves car at speed in competition mode!

Many thanks to Dave & Lynne
for their enthusiastic input into club activities.

The Weekend Sponsor, Peter Hendry, of Tableland Automatics
managed a very well earned 3rd place
in another beautifully presented car.

Pete has had dramas at recent events with his 120Y
not performing particularly well but apparently a little lathe trickery
has opened up the potential of this rig!

Pete finished in 885.54 secs and was also 2nd in 1600 - 2lt Class.

And then there was Scott Cahill in 4th overall
in his less than perfectly presented Leaning Laser!

Scotties time was 887.68 and he was also 1st in Under 1600 Class.

Grass Roots Motor Sports Fun At Its Best...
Minimal costs and great results.

Scottie was his consistent cruisy self with very few mistakes
despite pushing his car well beyond
any original design engineers allowances!

Not content with creaming
most of the rest of the field
Scottie decided
to do a little stunt driving
and see just how far
the Laser could Lean...
Not much further than it did
was the unanimous vote!

Rounding out the top 5 was Tony Fox in his big six XD Falcon.

Foxy spent all day chasing Scottie
and even though he got ahead once or twice
he was only able to finish 10 seconds back in a time of 897.07.

The fact that a fellow competitor
had kept the old bloke up to all hours the night before
did not help with Foxy's reaction times throughout the day!

Note to self:
Do not allow fellow competitors to keep Foxy up late before any event!!!

Foxy was 1st in the Over 2lt Class to at least retain some credibility.

6rh place went to Peter Brown in his Classic Celica.

Brownie finished in a total time of 920.84 secs
and was 3rd in the 1500 - 2lt Class.

Brownies very competitive car is still for sale
and he would like to sell it
before he gets too much slower himself!

Details via here.

The always entertaining Stick Quinn
came in 7th overall.

Stick's time was 933.55 secs.

Perhaps Stick was a little focused on becoming a Dad
at such a young age
rather than car control on the day!

Still mastering the 4WD Subaru was Bruce Perry
coming in 8th in his 2nd ever competitive motor sport event.

Bruce has a few suspension issues to sort
before his car will reach its potential
but he is progressing exceptionally well in his own abilities.

Bruce's time was 939.93 which actually also gave him 2nd in the 4WD Class.

As the Dad of Alex, one of Saturday's Junior Motorkhana competitors,
Mick Scomazzon had a small point to prove in age and experience
beating youth and exuberance!

Thankfully Mick did beat Alex
and finished 9th in a very credible time of 952.83.

This also gave Mick a trophy in being 2nd in the over 2lt Class.

Topping out the top ten was Ken Freeburn
having an absolute ball in Bob's 12 seater mini bus!

Not Kens usual mode of Motor Sport
being a bitumen racer primarily
at least he was happy being in a Ford and giving it heaps!

Ken's time was 971.41
which also gave him 3rd in the Over 2lt Class.

John Milwood made a rare appearance in his Two Tone Toyota
and had a cruisy day coming in 11th
in 1002.76.

And even though so far down the field
this still saw John finish 2nd in the Under 1600 Class and take home a trophy.

And then there was Robert Wochesländer!
Talk about making an entrance as a 1st time competitor...

Flipping the Club Camira will guarantee a reputation well into the future!

Now... No war jokes guys!

All credit to Robert he did get back behind the wheel

     and finished the day
   in Bob's Falcon wagon,
although Bob was a little unsure
        about giving him the drive!

  Roberts finishing time was 1032.49.
And rounding out the field of 14 drivers were the 2 juniors mentioned and shown above....
Alex Scomazzon in a total time of 1053.44 seconds and Tonja Ryan in 1235.30.

This event was the 4th event for 2008 and already there are 26 drivers competing for the Club Championship.
