The White Cockatoo "Dirty Car Fun" Khanacross

The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association (DSMSA) proudly hosted
The White Cockatoo “Dirty Car Fun” Khanacross
on Sunday September 6th '09 at it’s Reef & Rainforest Track, Mossman.

The event almost became one of Last Man Standing,
as despite 20 drivers starting the day,
only 13 managed to complete the event, with numerous mechanical failures,
and one very spectacular roll-over by Dave Page
driving Alex Scomazzon’s Stanza in its very 1st event at the track.

Dave’s roll-over was a stark reminder to all that Motorsports is dangerous,
no matter how controlled and safe the environment,
as his hard landing resulted in some injury,
and in fact the very 1st ever injury to any driver in the history of the club!

Many drivers drove much more sensibly in their subsequent runs,
which actually resulted in quicker times with much more controlled driving being displayed,
showing that constantly sideways is not the quickest way around the track.

Unfortunately as Dave was sharing the Clerk Of The Course Duties with Bob Errey,
thus enabling them both to compete, his departure to hospital to be checked out
caused the forced retirement of Bob when he was actually leading the event
so he could concentrate solely on the running of the event,
along with the huge amount of paperwork required when such an incident occurs.

The final results of The White Cockatoo “Dirty Car Fun” Khanacross
saw the top 3 spots all filled by local Mossman drivers,
and in fact all finishers were Mossmanites, with all the Cairns and Tableland drivers being non-finishers,
so it was locals who took home all the great prizes provided on the day.

Jacqui Osborne almost needed a wheel-barrow to cart home her booty,
being 1st in the 1600-2lt Class, 1st Lady, and 3rd Junior, along with 8th Overall on the day.

Bruce Perry was 1st Overall in his trusty Subaru Wagon in a time of 660.01 seconds,
Tony Fox 2nd in a borrowed Ford Laser, in 665.42 secs.,
and Rob Hughes 3rd in his surprisingly quick Hyundai Excel in 672.29 secs.

The DSMSA also presented its ‘new’ tractor to the membership on the day.
The tractor was made possible by generous donations of money and time
by various local organisations, businesses, and individuals.

The DSMSA committee and all members would therefore very much like to extend special thanks to:
The Port Douglas District and Combined Clubs,
The Mossman Bowls Club,
The White Cockatoo,
Ross Dunkerton & Family,
Bob Errey,
and Shane Heaven,
for their monetary contributions
towards the tractors acquisition.

Thanks also to:
Santarossa Engineering,
Michael Scomazzon,
Alex Scomazzon,
Cliff Hoffman,
and others,
for their donations of product and labour in making the tractor usable and safe,
thus enabling the club to now conduct their own slashing and other works at their track.
