The Sun Gods shone upon the Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association, throughout The White Cockatoo 2 Day Khanacross,
at their Mossman Reef & Rainforest track, over the weekend of 24th & 25th November 2007.
The track was in absolutely pristine condition, with recent rains creating a smooth fast surface, where stunning times were achieved by many drivers.
The top 2 positons for the weekend went down to the wire, and only 3 seconds separated Herberton driver Stephen Hendry in 1st place
and local Mossman hero Ben Burke in 2nd, after 15 competitors completed up to 18 runs each over the 2 days.
The event sponsor, Tony Fox, came a very credible 3rd in his 1st event in his big red XD Falcon after playing catch up all day Sunday
due to taking out 4 witches hats on his last run on Saturday afternoon taking him from 1st place, at the time, to starting 8th on Sunday morning.
Competitors travelled from far and wide to attend the event,
with one driver from as far away as South Australia,
and the club would like to especially thank Bob Byham, a Mt Gambier driver,
for stepping up to help with assistant steward duties on Sunday.
The club also thanks Phil Marris, as the event steward,
and Bob Errey, as the event director,
for their efforts in enabling the safe and fun running of the event.
Saturday night saw competitors and their families celebrate the 2007 season
with the DSMSA christmas party at The White Cockatoo, Mossman,
where they enjoyed a sumptious meal and live music throughout the night.
The last minute secondary sponsor of the weekend, Autopro of Mossman
also provided plenty of great giveaways during the bands breaks
and hilarity ensued with some of the quiz questions creating much debate
amongst those deperate to win something...
Thankfully google sorted any answers requiring immediate clarification!
Stephen Hendry was not only the overall winner of the weekend event
he was also deservedly crowned Club Champion for 2007 on the night
with a total of 98 points gained throughout the season.
Andrew Horn, of Kuranda, was 2nd for the year on 91 points,
and Scott Cahill, of Atherton, 3rd on 90 points.
Anne Thornbury, of Kuranda, was the very popular winner
of the 2007 Ladies Championship.
Anne almost beat her partner, Andrew Horn, overall for the weekend event
but a silly mistake, on her last run of Sunday,
saw her give away her spot and slip back 2 places, to ninth,
to give Andrew 7th overall.
Various other class trophies were also presented, on Saturday night,
with Stephen Hendry Club Champion in 1600 - 2lt,
Scottt Cahill in Under 1600, and Tony Fox in Over 2lt.
The Presidents Encouragement Trophy was awarded to Cairns driver Stick Quinn,
whose skills have improved markedly throughout the year,
and his little Gemini is looking like being right up there with the winners
in next years events.
With a Terrific Track, Fantastic Food, Affordable Accommodation,
and Cheerful Cameraderie, Fun & Frivolity was enjoyed throughout the weekend.
After a very successful 2007 the club looks forward to an even better 2008
and plans are already underway in putting together the event calendar for next year.
Up to 12 events are planned, for 08, including Motorkhanas and Khanacrosses
with further 2 day events, and new practise days for those wanting to have a go.
Full results from The White Cockatoo 2 Day Khanacross are shown below
and the 2008 event calendar will be shown via Event Calendar once finalised.
The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association wishes a Safe & Merry Christmas to all
and looks forward to welcoming many more new members in the New Year.
